History: Peeta Mellark's History from The Hunger Games Wiki
Presentation: When Peeta is met for the first time in the book “The Hunger Games”, the first thing everyone notices about him is that he is one of the most personable people you could ever meet. Peeta is the sort of person that you can’t help but like right off the bat. It’s not just the fact that he’s good looking, which he is, with his blonde hair and stocky build; it’s about the fact that anyone could tell that deep down, he is a genuinely nice guy. The sort of guy that people want to be around and hang out with and it shows because he is always surrounded by a group of people in school. This is not to say that he is the most popular person there, but that he hangs out with a lot of people who like him, and who he likes back. And it’s very easy to see why he has such a large group of friends; he cares about people, and enjoys being around them. Peeta is a social creature, and is definitely not the kind of guy that wishes he could be alone for long amounts of time, unlike his fellow tribute, Katniss Everdeen. Just like everyone else, there are times that he’d like to be by himself, but that’s usually only when he’s upset at something that the people he’s around have done something that he does not like or agree with.
Once he understands a situation, then he knows what to do, both to help himself and anyone else involved. This is shown when he tells the audience during the interviews before the games that he loves Katniss; this wasn’t said just because he needed to get it out. It was said because he knew it would help the both of them in the arena, to get the sponsors they needed that could possibly save their life in a dire situation. The same thing happened when, on the chariots they rode in the tribute parade, he had Katniss hold his hand; yes, he wanted her to for slightly selfish reasons, but he also knew the crowd would love it, and therefore love them.
This understanding and strategic thinking is only part of what makes the crowd love him. Peeta is bold and brave in what he says and does, much like when he throws the burned bread to Katniss when he saw her starving on the streets. He knows the right timing for a gesture, a well-placed word, or a joke. He knows what he feels and he is able to put it into words that everyone can understand. That is, in fact, the biggest advantage he has over everyone else; his words, carefully thought out and placed well, can move a crowd to tears, to cheers, or even to a revolution. Peeta catches onto things very quickly when they involve strategy. Feelings cloud his judgment and his ability to figure some things out, much like how he thought Katniss really was in love with him like he was in her, but when it came to figuring things out that would help once they were in the arena, which was easily done. He is very good at keeping secrets, though does have the tendency to be a bit of a hypocrite when he gets angry at other people for keeping secrets from him. This usually involves him lashing out in some way, and is usually done by breaking a vase or hitting a wall rather than doing something to hurt a person.
He is artistic, having frosted the cakes in his family’s bakery all his life, and this translates well onto actual canvases. But more than that, Peeta can paint pictures with his words, as evidenced by when he describes the situation they were under during the second Hunger Games that he was involved in, and it helps everyone know what he wants them to understand. He can easily sympathize with someone and what they’re going through, and also makes it easy for others to be sympathetic toward him. One of his better traits is that he’s selfless when it comes to the important things; he was perfectly willing to die in the arena both times, just so Katniss could win, and therefore live and go home. It’s not something he thinks twice about, either. It’s more like a stated fact in his mind that he will give up something important so someone else who he cares about will benefit from it, even if it is his own life.
Motivations: Yes, there is certain sweetness and gentleness to him, but don’t think that means he is completely innocent of the world around him. Peeta knows what hardship is, and while his witty and self-deprecating humor helps to hide it, there are things he knows more about then some people, and especially more than the Capitol citizens of which he knows his life can depend on. Peeta is a baker’s son, and while that means he was never starving like many of the other residents of District Twelve, it was also rather sad because his family lived on stale bread. Not much of a hardship, all things considering, but that is how his life at home always went, being outwardly fine and well off, but cruel and sad on the inside. His mother would beat him and his brothers for the slightest infraction, while his father, a kind man as well, could only stand by and do nothing. She’s shown as hitting him so hard in the face when he was younger that he got a black eye; in another instance, when Gale is being whipped publicly, he is able to hear it before Katniss, and he knows exactly what the sound is, most likely from hearing it more times than he would like.
It’s no shock to know, then, that Peeta has a rather low opinion of himself. He doesn’t think that he will survive the Hunger Games, and everything he does, while being selfless, is also because he doesn’t think himself capable of doing certain things. When Haymitch, their mentor, asks what sort of skills they have, he downplays his tremendously; it’s only when Katniss lets them know that he’s strong and can lift hundred pound bags of flower, and that he came second in a wrestling match at school, that he does admit that he can do those things. It’s immediately followed by him letting them know that none of those skills matter, and that even his own mother doesn’t think he’ll win the games. It even shows in the fact that he can get jealous, even admitting to Katniss that he was jealous of the relationship she had with Gale even before they had really talked to each other, and deep down knows that he can never really measure up.
But he is a survivalist. He’s a fighter when need be, though if it was possible, he would prefer to be a peace keeper, and talk things out with his words rather than solve things with his fists. It’s a bit like wanting everyone to get along, but knowing that it isn’t possible, so he will do what he can to avoid as much bloodshed as possible. While he started working with the Careers during the first part of the games, he spent most of the rest of the game camouflaged to look like a rock, which helps tell you he prefers not to fight if possible.
It’s this part of himself that he doesn’t want to change, stating that he doesn’t want them to change him in there, so that he could at least die as himself. While he admits that he will kill, when the time comes for it, he doesn’t just want to be “a piece in their games”. It’s a revolutionary statement, to be sure, but Peeta doesn’t mean it that way; he just wants to maintain his identity, not to other people, but to himself. To be the young man he knew as himself, not as what other people wanted him to be. If anything, that makes him more steady and reliable than the others, because he knows who he is, what he’s capable of, and what he wants to do. He also has a strong sentimental streak, especially when it comes to Katniss. His love for her is as steady and reliable as the sun, and just as bright. He’s loved her since they were little and didn’t even know each other, and even says that being picked as tribute for District Twelve was “lucky” because he finally had a chance to be noticed by her.
Everything he did in regards to Katniss was because of his love for her, something that he never had to fake, or pretend to be.
SAMPLES
Thread: I have an ongoing thread, and several threads here from Maison de Portes, but the Peeta at Portes is from the middle of Mockingjay, so he's played a little different, but here is a sample post:
[Today he needed to say something to the crowds. There was the standard speech to go with, the one that they didn’t want him to drift away from. Considering what he’d seen on the tour, he knew that he shouldn’t do anything that wasn’t actually sanctioned by the Capitol. They were always watching, eyes everywhere. But Peeta smiles on the screen.]
For those of you who may not know me, I’m Peeta Mellark, victor of the 74th Hunger Games. I’m truly sorry for not being around, but I was needed elsewhere in the Capitol for some time, and it’s only now that I’m able to see and meet everyone.
[Scripted part is over, or most of it, anyway. That means he can relax even more, the smile moving into something more natural, but the differences between the two smiles was very minute.]
I’m also a mentor for District Twelve, so... hello. I’m sorry that you need to be put through all of this. But the rewards are worth it, and the Capitol takes care of its victors. [That was the rest of the scripted part. Being in the games was supposed to be something you WANT to be in, isn’t that right, Districts One and Two?]
I hope that I can be of help to every one of you, just like how our team was a help for us. I wouldn’t have made it very far without them, and neither will you. So when they say to do something, you probably should do it. [He laughs.] Beware the showers, though. They can be pretty deadly!
But if you’ll excuse me, there’s someone really important to me that I need to go see. I’m sure I’m going to get an earful about why I’ve kept her waiting so long!
Prose: This made absolutely no sense. It wasn’t like there was some kind of funny joke being played on him, either; the Capitol seemed to make a habit of not joking with the most ridiculous of things. But there was something very wrong here, and Peeta wasn’t entirely sure of what it was. In the first place, he was standing in the tribute training room again. He’d already done this; he’d already shown the gamemakers what he could do in his first hunger games. And that was what the biggest surprise was. He was already a victor. Both he and Katniss had won this a little under a year ago, and that meant they never had to deal with it again, at least in a tribute capacity. Peeta had been preparing himself to be a mentor. Telling himself what he should say, how he would react when he was watching the kids he had to take care of being hurt in the arena. The right way to get all of those sponsors lined up, because he needed to somehow keep the District Twelve tributes alive, until it could only be one victor. The Capitol wasn’t going to let there be another “star crossed lovers” deal.
So why was he here? From what Peeta had heard, the Capitol had some kind of thing going on, where they could bring in people from other worlds. It sounded absolutely insane, but he wouldn’t put it past them to do something like that, in whatever way possible. The games could go on forever that way. And yet, here he was, standing in the middle of the training room, knowing that he had a set amount of time to show the gamemakers something, or else he’d be dismissed without showing anything, and possibly getting a low score. Right. So he had to show them something, preferably something new. But they had just seen everything he could do in the arena, just a few months ago. They knew he could paint himself into a rock, that he could use a knife, that he had a hard time telling the difference between poisonous berries and not.
“Peeta Mellark, from District Twelve,” He called out, looking up at the people who were watching him intently. Some of them were smiling at him, others were whispering to each other. But most of them looked upset to see him standing there, and he knew why. No more “star crossed lovers” if one of them or both of them had to be in another game. Two minutes had passed. Time to do or die, and that was very literal. Paint himself into the wall, or throw some weights around. No. He had to use his best weapon of all.
“You already know what I can do,” He started to say, holding his hands out in front of him, palms up. “I could camouflage myself into the floor, so you couldn’t see me. Maybe they’ll just walk past me in the arena again.” He grinned; glad to hear some soft chuckles from the gallery. “I could throw around some weights again, and this time I promise not to almost drop any on my foot.” Some smiles from gamemakers from the past.
“Unfortunately there’s no way to bake a cake or even some bread, not that that would show anything to anyone. But none of these things show what I’ll be bringing into the arena this time around,” He swallowed. “What I had last year was my love for a girl that I didn’t know if I would ever see again. It’s hard to imagine what that’s like. Being put into a place with hidden dangers everywhere, knowing that while I was fighting for my life, so was everyone else. Knowing that I would have given up my life, so long as I knew Katniss would be alive at the end.” His smile turned sad.
“This time, when I go into the arena, I want the same thing. I will give up my life for Katniss Everdeen, if she’s in the arena, and if she’s not, I’ll do whatever it takes to get home to her,” And here’s where the lies come in, he thought sadly. “Our love is what makes us strong. Her love for me is what makes me strong. I will use whatever I have to; do whatever I have to, because I cannot live my life without her in it.” This is what they wanted to hear, he knew it, and he could tell by the tears some of them discreetly wiped away, the smiles, the murmurs. There wasn’t any clapping, but that was just to appear in control and not easily swayed. Peeta was learning this game quickly; he knew how to play it, but he was still working on playing it perfectly.
“Thank you for listening to me,” Peeta said, giving a short, quick bow. “If you want me to throw a spear or two—“
“You’re dismissed, Mr. Mellark.”
Another bow, and he was gone.
What is your character scored: In his first Hunger Games, Peeta was given the score of 8, most likely because of his show of strength in the training room. In the book, for his second game, he was given the score of 12, because he painted a picture of Rue during his training session, and the gamemakers wanted to make both him and Katniss targets in the arena. Since he is from before the second game, his score would most likely be a 9 or a 10, given the fact that he has been in the arena before and knows how it works, and the gamemakers also know now how much of a fighter he is, the way he can use a knife, and the fact that he would do anything to protect Katniss, whether she’s in the arena or not.
Additional information:
Past victor: Please describe your character's arena, and their relationship with the Capitol since.
Peeta was a tribute in the 74th Hunger Games. The arena set up was fairly simple, all things considered. In the middle sat the golden cornucopia, with each tribute stand in a semi-circle around it. The weapons and equipment was spread out around it, with the better equipment and weapons put closer to the mouth of the cornucopia. On one side of the arena there was a large, tall grassy field. The place, as Peeta put it, had a sinister feel to it, like it could hide any number of poisonous things, or traps to kill you. On another side, there was a large lake, which was a big source of water for most of the tributes, especially the Careers. On the last side, there was an actual forest. Large trees, hills, bushes, the whole nine yards. Inside of the forest were plenty of ways to feed yourself, as well as several sources of water, in the form of small ponds and a stream. Near the stream there were plenty of rocks, and from what was seen, there was at least one cave near part of the stream. The stream and ponds were filled with fish, and there were many different animals in the forest, such as squirrels, rabbits, and different types of birds. There were also several dangers within the forest; the gamemakers had unleashed a wall of fire in one section, and they also launched fireballs at them. There were also a few hives filled with trackerjackers, which are a mutation created by the Capitol; they’re like hornets, but their stings are more poisonous and can cause hallucinations.
Ever since Peeta and Katniss won the games, the Capitol has loved them. The romance that they played in the games was something that all of the Capitol citizens loved, and they only grew crazier about the couple as time went on. While the relationship wasn’t really a true relationship, both parties were able to play it well (though on Peeta’s part, he actually does love Katniss, versus her pretending to in a way so that no one they loved would die). Once a tribute wins, they don’t have to work anymore, and so they can cultivate a talent that they can show off to the Capitol. Peeta’s talent is painting, and since everyone in the Capitol loves colorful things, that went over really well. Throughout the Victory Tour that tributes make once they’ve won, Peeta tried to ignore the way that things were going. There was unrest in the districts, and the relationship he and Katniss had was supposed to be a distraction to everyone, so that the rebellion that was starting might be put to a stop. As hard as they tried, though, they couldn’t stop it from happening. While in the Capitol, during a party in their honor, Peeta expressed his disgust at the way the citizens acted, after finding out that they eat as much as they want at a feast, and then drink something that will make them be sick, just so they can eat as much as they want again. It was then that Peeta told Katniss that maybe what they were doing was wrong; maybe they shouldn’t be trying to put a stop to the rebellion, and instead start helping it.
It’s this idea that Peeta has now that he’s in the Capitol. He pretends to be a boy deliriously in love (kind of), a boy who’s so thankful and grateful to the Capitol, and a boy who is as friendly as possible with them. But on the inside, Peeta agrees with the rebellion. The districts can’t go on much longer with the way things are, with the Capitol in charge and the people starving. Unfortunately, Peeta and Katniss had never been involved in anything that the rebels were planning, so it makes it difficult for them to do something about these opinions. But if Peeta was able to get in touch with the rebels, he would do whatever he could to help them.
